step 2 step 2

Only left in stock

The step-by-step method is developed by Rob Brunia and Cor van Wijgerden to teach children how to play chess. It is the most popular series worldwide and has proven itself very successful over the years.

The second step focuses on the first principles of tactics and positional play. It consists of a manual for the trainer and workbooks for the students: step 2, step 2 extra, step 2 plus, step 2 mix, and step 2 thinking ahead.

Manual for chess trainers
The manual is a great aid - even for experienced trainers. It includes ready-made lessons, hints on how to use the workbooks, how to give assistance, and much more.

Workbook for students
The workbook covers the following topics:

  • Activity of pieces
  • Targets of attack
  • Double attack: queen
  • The pin
  • Eliminating of the defense
  • The 3 golden rules
  • Discovered attack
  • Defending against mate
  • The short notation

Step 2 extra
This additional workbook requires a slightly higher skill level than the workbook. The last 26 pages contain tests.

Step 2 plus
The plus workbook features additional lessons on topics that were only briefly discussed in the ordinary book due to a lack of space.

Additional topics include:

  • delivering mate (mate in one with a double check, threatening mate)
  • pawn endings
  • the opening
  • legal or illegal?
  • defending against scholar's mate
  • route planning
  • draw by stalemate

Step 2 mix
In the mix workbook are 61 pages with exercises, which means as many as 61x12=732-14 (drawings) = 718 puzzles.
The themes are taken from Step 2, Step 2 plus, Step 2 thinking ahead and the lower Steps. This workbook containing exercises with one ‘simple’ assignment: play the best move. Just like in a real game, you do not know whether you can win or whether you have to defend. First, look at what’s going on? Which targets can you exploit? What is the opponent threatening? Is it time to draw? In short, all kinds of stuff and you must find the best move.

Step 2 thinking ahead
This workbook focuses on blindfold chess, knowing the names of the squares, and playing chess without a board.
