Let it be chess

Ah, a new year. It seems like a logical time to take on a new hobby, and we've got just the thing: chess! But don't just take our word for it. Here are the top 5 reasons you should take up chess this year.

1. Chess improves schoolwork and grades
Many studies have proven that kids who play chess read better, perform better in maths and develop a greater learning ability. Also, at least one study has shown that moving those knights and rooks around can, in fact, raise a person’s intelligence quotient, while a German study found that it exercises both the left and right side of the brain.

2. Chess is cheap
You don't need big fancy equipment to play chess. You just need a simple chessboard and a set of pieces. We offer some fabulous basic chess sets, and for as little as R100 you can set yourself up to get going.

3. Chess is great for mental health
Chess is an activity that exercises the brain, and keeping your brain fit will benefit you for the rest of your life. Taking part in brain games can reduce the risk of dementia and help to fine-tune motor skills. It's also a great aid in recovery from brain injury and strokes.

4. Chess teaches life skills
Young kids who play chess develop analytical, synthetic and decision-making skills which they can transfer to real life. One of the last parts of the brain to develop is the prefrontal cortex. This is the area of the brain responsible for planning, judgment and self-control. Strategy games, like chess, can promote prefrontal cortex development and help kids make better decisions in all areas of life, perhaps keeping them from making a stupid, risky choices associated with being a teenager.

5. Chess is a game for people of all ages
You can learn to play at any age, and in chess, unlike in many other sports, you don't ever have to retire. Yes, age isn't a factor, so you'll also never have to look far to find an opponent because young can play old and old can play young.
