Reader’s reviews:

I initially picked up this book simply because it was about chess. I always appreciate tactical refreshers, even though I own several similar books. However, as many other reviewers have noted, this one truly stands out!

As a USCF 1950-rated player who prefers positional play, I’m fully aware of the irreplaceable importance of tactical vision. This book reintroduced me to the art of spotting potential combinations, which often involve sacrifices, by showing how pieces can be aligned or left unprotected.

Although many examples were straightforward, I translated these lessons into my real games, suddenly seeing seemingly blocked lines as openings and capitalizing on them. It's incredible how such a concise book can remind you of the chaos and creativity lurking in every position! -PKO

This is a fantastic book by two of the most respected chess authors, Irving Chernev and Fred Reinfeld. Winning Chess boosts your tactical skills with numerous diagrams illustrating techniques like knight forks, discovered checks, double checks, skewers, surprise moves, and queening combinations. It also covers overworked pieces and mating patterns.

Toward the end, the book features six illustrative games and solutions to quiz problems. The layout is highly practical—each middle game position is paired with its winning move on the opposite page, making it easy to follow. Plus, the algebraic notation adds to its modern appeal. Highly recommended for improving your chess! -B Gold
