Lasker’s Manual of Chess | Emanuel Lasker
Lasker’s Manual of Chess is a book on the game of chess written in 1925 by former World Chess Champion Emanuel Lasker. He is often regarded as the greatest chess player of modern times, holding the world championship title for an unprecedented 28 years.
Even in his sixties, he demonstrated remarkable resilience by returning to competitive chess after a decade-long hiatus, defeating Max Euwe, who would soon become world champion. Lasker’s extraordinary abilities can be attributed to his extensive knowledge of all aspects of chess and his independence from prevailing schools of thought or trends.
The book is divided into six sections: The Elements of Chess, The Theory of the Openings, The Combination, Position Play, The Aesthetic Effect in Chess, and Examples and Models.
- This book is ideal for intermediate to advanced players but offers accessible explanations for beginners
- Regarded as one of the greatest chess books ever written
- Lasker can help you master; basic methods of gaining advantages, exchange value of pieces, combinations, position play, the aesthetics of chess, and almost every other important aspect of the game
- Gain insights into dozens of different openings, including the Petroff Defense, the Hungarian Defense, King’s Bishop, Ponziani, Giuoco Piano, and Four Knights’ Game
- Concise, no-frill lessons which are guaranteed to raise your game
- A rewarding feature of the book is Lasker’s elaboration on the theories of William Steinitz
- All you need to know to be competitive!
Reader’s Reviews:
This is undoubtedly one of the best chess books available. It is exceptionally well-written deserving a six-star rating. Lasker held the world championship for 28 impressive years; reading his book will elevate your game in your local league! Although I haven't finished the entire book yet, it has kept me up at night because it's that compelling.
Do yourself a favour and get a copy right away. As an average player, I don’t typically write glowing reviews. Still, Lasker will teach you how and why to play effectively. No matter your starting point, this book will help you improve your rating to 2000 or above!
If you don’t see any progress, it’s likely because you haven’t engaged with the material—it probably just sat on your shelf for too long – TheRugRat

About the Author:
Emanuel Lasker (1868 to 1941) was a German chess player, mathematician, and philosopher. He was the second World Chess Champion, holding the title for 28 years, from 1894 to 1921, the longest reign of any officially recognised World Chess Champion in history. In his prime, Lasker was one of the most dominant champions, and he is still generally regarded as one of the strongest players in history.
His contemporaries used to say that Lasker used a "psychological" approach to the game and even that he sometimes deliberately played inferior moves to confuse opponents. Recent analysis, however, indicates that he was ahead of his time and used a more flexible approach than his contemporaries, which mystified many of them.
