Kubb (pronounced Koob) is a unique lawn game where the objective is to knock over wooden blocks (Kubbs) by throwing wooden batons.

Often described as a blend of bowling and horseshoes, it’s played on a rectangular pitch and can be enjoyed on grass, sand, or snow.

Kubb provides a unique and memorable experience for everyone.

  • Simple rules and flexible gameplay make it suitable for all ages and skill levels.
  • A social game that fosters teamwork, friendly competition, and connection.
  • Combines physical activity with improved coordination and strategic thinking.
  • Offers a window into traditional Scandinavian culture.

This standard Kubb set includes:

  • 1 King
    • The largest and most important piece.
    • Placed in the center of the pitch on the center line.
    • The objective is to knock over the King last to win the game.
  • 10 Kubbs (also called "baseline Kubbs")
    • Smaller rectangular blocks.
    • 5 are placed at each team's baseline at the start of the game.
    • As the game progresses, knocked-over Kubbs are thrown onto the opponent’s half and stood upright to become field Kubbs.
  • 6 Batons (or throwing sticks)
    • Cylindrical dowels used to knock over the Kubbs and ultimately the King.
    • Thrown underhand and end-over-end.
  • 4 Corner Stakes (optional but common)
    • Used to mark the corners of the rectangular pitch (usually 5m x 8m).
    • Helps define the playing area clearly.
  • 1 high-quality House of Chess storage bag in bold South African colours.

The History of Kubb and Rules:

The history of Kubb is steeped in tradition, with its roots believed to date back to Viking times. Often referred to as "Viking Chess," the game is said to have originated in Scandinavia, where legend has it that Norse warriors played using pieces of wood during their downtime.

However, these origins are largely speculative, as no concrete historical evidence links the game directly to the Vikings.

The rules of Kubb are quite simple. It will take you approximately 3 hours to learn and a few games to get the hang of it.
