Reader’s reviews:
I'm not a particularly strong chess player, but this book simplifies complex positions wonderfully. John Nunn has clearly invested significant time in selecting games that make this book a pleasure to read. The thematic examples are clear without being overly simplistic or one-sided.
Much like Chernev's classic, Nunn explains every move, often referring to prior games with similar opening moves. Reading it on a Kindle was convenient, as the hyperlinks made it easy to jump between referenced games.
The opening analysis is exceptionally well-done—why can't all opening books be this insightful? Nunn carefully explains why certain decisions in the early game become pivotal later on.
For weaker players like myself, skipping over some of the deeper analysis is easy. There are longer variations that break down how better moves could have been played, and while I followed along with some, having a board (or digital equivalent) was necessary. Despite that, the main text was clear enough to follow without actively playing along, as the board’s position was described in detail.
I would highly recommend this book to those learning the game. Stronger players will likely get even more out of it! – BL
Given how long ago the book was published, I realize this review might not get much visibility, but I’ll share my thoughts anyway. As of 2011, there’s a collection of books from Everyman Chess under the Move by Move series, and this book easily holds its own alongside them.
Right from the first game, you’ll find at least five valuable lessons—just from that one game! A Move by Move format aims to break things down, explaining the themes behind each move. This book exemplifies that approach beautifully. It’s a must-have for club-level players who benefit from detailed explanations that higher-rated players naturally understand through experience - J Stirling
